My inceptive perception – Power of Social Media sites

Facebook, twitter, you tube, blogger, wiki, Flickr, MySpace, LinkedIn, Stumble Upon – there can’t be a computer literate who doesn’t know these terms. These social sites exploded their customer base with growth of internet user community and made the world a truly global village.

Their sphere of influence has made easy to disseminate information at lighting speed, scheduling events, and coordinating movements. Many social issues in the recent were brought to notice of world public which would have been buried down other wise.

These social networking sites have been developed by integrating modern technology of Web 2.0 to be highly accessible, scalable and supporting most of the information formats such as words, pictures, audio, & video.  Using these features users are now able to effectively share information among them which they have gathered by their experience. This information is termed as user generated content and is preferred most by users as they generally have following features
·         Speak the language of the common user
o   no usage of jargons
o   step by step description of the process,
o   no assumptions like ‘reader does know this concept’ are made in explanation
·         Approaches the problem at hand from the reader’s point of view and caters to wide range of enquires.
·         Provides confidence to reader about the efficiency of solution suggested, as it has all ready been tried out.
·         Last, but not least, it is free of cost.
When you are about to fill a form, generally you would be provided a FAQ. But it will not answer all your doubts, you may not understand the explanation provided over there or you might be unaware the words used in the explanation. Hence you always prefer personal guidance from your peers who have already filled or are filling their forms.

This exchange of content does not only benefit the customers but also the vendors as they help them to know what user prefers and how he prefers it. The additional cost of providing one to one support could also be reduced if active customer participation is encouraged.  As a result, vendors (especially product companies) are eyeing to tap this digital consumer market and expand their market presence.

IT service companies are poising themselves to provide these business intelligence services in SaaS model which not only needs technical expertise, but also sound understanding of the concerned industry. This internet revolution has been predicted to be the deciding factor of their future market share.
